This was the last entry in Saima Harmaja’s diary, written on 30th March 1937. She died less than a month later. She was 23.

Lingers still the first of vernal days,
hangs above the yard its coruscation.
Little bird of winter sings its praise,
effortlessly lovely, new creation.

Silver sheen of branches’ peeling bark
shimmers now as twilight starts to thicken.
Light are silent breezes in the dark.
All the treasure of my life so stricken –

all this heart of mine once had of grace –
maybe on this moment now encroaches
in the light that hides its smiling trace
as the shrouding gloaming now approaches.

Ensimmäinen kevätpäivä jää
vielä väreilemään yllä pihan.
Pieni talvilintu livertää
uusin äänin, uupumatta ihan.

Hopealta kuori oksien
hohtaa hämyn tihetessä hiukan.
Keveä on ilma hiljainen.
Kaikki aarteet elämäni niukan,

kaikki armo, minkä ikänään
sydän omisti, lie läsnä tässä:
valossa, mi kätkee hymyään,
sädehuntuisessa…
